The base 'spectrum' is recognizable, but the technical combining suffix '-metry' (meaning 'measurement') may be unfamiliar to many learners, making the formation only partly predictable.

Etymology

The word spectrometry comes from parts that mean 'see' and 'measure'. The spectr part is the same as in spectacle and inspect and means 'see', and the -metry part means 'measurement', like a meter, so spectrometry is 'measuring what you see' in a spectrum and that is why scientists use it to find what a substance is made of.
