Etymology

Spectrophotometry breaks into three parts: spectro- from a root meaning 'to look', seen in spectator, photo- meaning 'light', as in photograph, and -metry meaning 'measure', as in thermometer. So spectrophotometry literally means 'measuring light', which is why the method measures how much light a substance absorbs or lets through.
