Etymology

The word nitrocellulose combines nitro- meaning 'nitrogen' and cellulose meaning 'plant fiber', the material in wood or cotton. So, nitrocellulose is plant fiber changed by a strong chemical called nitric acid, which is why it is very flammable and used for explosives and old film.
