fertilization singular

Morphology

fertilization = fertilize (semi-transparent) = fertile + ize + ation

The word is regularly built from 'fertile' through 'fertilize' and '-ation', but the biological sense is a specialized extension of 'make fertile'.

Etymology

The word fertilization comes from the Latin fertilis, 'fruitful', and from ferre, 'to bear'. So when a sperm joins an egg and a new life can begin, the egg is able to 'bear' that life — that is why we call this start of life fertilization.
