Morphology
annual = annu + al
The word is built from the Latin stem 'annu-' plus '-al', but the stem is not a transparent modern English morpheme for most learners.
Etymology
Annual comes from the Latin annus 'year' and is the same root as anniversary. That is why calling a flower an annual means it completes its life in just one 'year' or season.
