Albatross comes from the Portuguese and Spanish word alcatraz, itself from Arabic parts al- and ghattas meaning 'the diver', because sailors used it for large sea birds that dive and glide over the ocean. So an albatross today is a big seabird known for long, powerful gliding flight.
