Etymology

The word mollymawk comes from an old Dutch sailors' word mallemok, probably made from parts meaning 'foolish' and 'gull'. Sailors used it for a small albatross that looks a little like a gull, so the image of a 'foolish gull' helps explain why it became the name of this seabird.
