Morphology
misappropriation = misappropriate (semi-transparent) = mis + appropriate + ion
Formation is regular (mis- + appropriate + -ion), but learners may not readily know the verb sense of 'appropriate', so the noun may not be fully guessable.
Etymology
Misappropriation comes from mis- 'wrong' and appropriate 'to take for yourself'. Imagine someone given money to look after who takes it for their own use; that's why misappropriation means the dishonest or wrong use of money or property you were meant to care for.
