Etymology
The word alcohol-dependent starts with alcohol, which comes from an old Arabic word al-kuhl meaning 'fine powder' and later came to name strong distilled liquids. The part dependent means 'needing' or 'relying on', so alcohol-dependent describes someone who 'needs' alcohol and cannot control their use.
