Etymology
The word alcohol comes from Arabic al- + kuhl, which first meant 'the kohl' and then any very pure distillate, and chemists later used the name for many similar liquids. Today alcohols are chemical liquids such as ethanol and methanol that share a small 'OH' part, which is why the same name is used for both the drink and these chemicals.
