Morphology

worker = work (semi-transparent) = work + er

Formally 'work' + '-er', but the sociopolitical sense 'a member of the working class' is an extended, class-based meaning rather than a literal agentive.

Etymology

Worker also came to mean the group of people who do paid manual or factory jobs when factories grew. So in politics 'workers' often means the working class, the people who do much of the physical work in society.
