Etymology
Typhoid comes from the Greek root typhos, which means 'smoke' or 'stupor'. People used the 'smoke' image because the illness gives a high fever and confusion, like a fog in the mind. It is related to the word typhus, so typhoid is the name for a serious fever disease that can make you very sick.
