Surface Forms

repress infinitive
repressed past
repressed past participle
repressing present participle
represses third person singular

Morphology

repress = press (transparent) = re + press

In this production sense, repress means simply 'press again' or 'make another pressing', which follows a regular and easily understood pattern.

Etymology

Repress comes from the parts re- (which can mean 'back' or 'again') and press 'to push'. In music and printing, to repress a record is to 'press' it again for a new run, which is why it means making another set of physical copies.
