Etymology
Inverter comes from the Latin parts in- meaning 'into' and verter meaning 'to turn', the same root you see in convert. Think of an inverter as a machine that 'turns' one kind of electricity into another. That's why an inverter changes direct current called 'DC' into alternating current called 'AC'.
