Morphology

inductance = induct (opaque) = induct + ance

Although morphologically 'induct' + '-ance' accounts for the form, the sense 'an electrical component' is a technical/metonymic extension (property → device) that cannot be derived from the base verb by ordinary rules.

Etymology

Inductance (the component) takes its name from induce, with in- 'into' and ducere 'to lead', like in conduct. That's why an inductance coil 'leads' a voltage into the circuit and so slows or opposes quick changes in current.
