Morphology

antagonist = agonist (opaque) = anti + agonist

Although the word is structurally anti- plus agonist, the modern sense 'adversary' is not readily recoverable for an average learner from the base alone.

Etymology

Antagonist comes from the Greek parts anti- 'against' and agon 'contest', and it sits opposite the word protagonist (the main character). That's why an antagonist is someone who stands 'against' or challenges the hero.
