The word subsidiary comes from the Latin subsidium 'help', made from sub- 'under' and a root meaning 'to sit', which gives the image of something placed 'under' to support another. It is the same root as subsidy 'support', so a subsidiary company is one that sits 'under' and helps or is controlled by a larger company.
