Morphology

sales + talk

The compound is compositionally predictable: 'sales' (relating to selling) used attributively plus 'talk' (speech) yields 'speech intended to sell'. A B1 learner who knows both constituents should be able to infer this meaning, and the same morphology/logic exists in many languages, making it transparently interpretable.

Etymology

Sales talk comes from sellers who used loud, clever talk to make sales in markets and shops. That's why sales talk now means speech meant to persuade someone to 'buy' something.
