Morphology

The adjective is transparently formed by combining the noun 'penicillin' with the adjective 'resistant' to mean 'resistant to penicillin'.

Etymology

Penicillin-resistant combines penicillin, named after a mold called Penicillium whose spores look like a small 'paintbrush', and resistant, which means 'able to stand against' or 'not give in'. So, penicillin-resistant describes bacteria that are not killed by penicillin.
