  • "Some of the antibodies that we used will react to proteins found in other vertebrate cells, but none of the antibodies react to microbes, which supports our theory that these structures are surviving osteocytes."

Morphology

osteocyte = osteo (semi-transparent) = osteo + oste + cyte

The structure is regular (osteo- 'bone' + -cyte 'cell'), but both elements are technical combining forms that many general learners do not know.

Etymology

Osteocyte comes from two Greek parts: oste- meaning 'bone' and -cyte meaning 'cell'. So an osteocyte is literally a 'bone cell', which helps you remember it is the mature cell that lives in and cares for bone.
