The structure is regular (osteo- 'bone' + -cyte 'cell'), but both elements are technical combining forms that many general learners do not know.
Etymology
Osteocyte comes from two Greek parts: oste- meaning 'bone' and -cyte meaning 'cell'. So an osteocyte is literally a 'bone cell', which helps you remember it is the mature cell that lives in and cares for bone.
