Morphology

osseous = bone (semi-transparent) = osse + ous

The meaning ('relating to bone') is clear, but the visible root 'osse-' is an unfamiliar Latin combining form rather than the common English word 'bone', so learners may not readily connect form to meaning.

Etymology

The word osseous comes from a Latin word for 'bone' and contains the root oss-, which you also see in ossify. So osseous means 'bony' or 'made of bone'.
