Cartilaginous comes from the Latin root cartilago, which means 'cartilage' and is the same root as the English word cartilage. It refers to the bendy, firm tissue found in places like the ear or nose, so we call an animal 'cartilaginous' when its body parts or skeleton are made of cartilage rather than bone.
