Surface Forms

infarction singular
infarctions plural

Morphology

infarction = infarct (opaque) = infarct + ion

The step 'infarct' → 'infarction' is a regular medical nominalization using the productive suffix '-ion'.

Etymology

Infarction comes from Latin parts in- 'into' and farcire 'to stuff'. A helpful image is a blood vessel 'stuffed' by a clot so blood cannot get through, and the tissue in that area dies, which is why an infarction means local tissue death from a blocked blood supply.
