Etymology
Corticosteroid comes from cortex, meaning 'bark' or 'outer layer', and steroid, a kind of chemical. So a corticosteroid is a steroid made by or acting on the 'outer layer' of a gland such as the adrenal cortex, which is why these drugs reduce inflammation and calm the immune system.
