Morphology

autoimmune = immune (semi-transparent) = auto + immune

The word is built compositionally from auto- 'self' + immune, but the term is somewhat specialized and more technical than an ordinary learner-friendly combination.

Etymology

The word autoimmune has two parts: auto- meaning 'self' (the same auto- you see in automatic) and immune meaning 'protected' or 'safe from disease'. So an autoimmune reaction is when the body's own defense attacks its own healthy cells instead of protecting them.
