Etymology
Archipelago comes from Greek parts archi-, the same arch- you see in archbishop meaning 'chief' or 'main', and pelagos 'sea'. It first named the Aegean Sea as the 'main sea', and later people used it for the many islands there, so archipelago now means a group or chain of islands.
