Etymology
Alkalosis comes from alkali, a word that comes from the Arabic 'al-qaly' meaning 'ashes' because people used plant ashes to make lye, a strong cleaning liquid, and -osis which means a condition. So alkalosis is the condition of the blood being too alkaline (not acidic), which is why doctors use the word for high blood pH.
