Morphology
tolerant = tolerate (transparent) = toler + ant
Formed from the verb 'tolerate' plus the adjectival suffix '-ant', with a regular orthographic change (loss of final -e).
Etymology
Tolerant comes from the old Latin word tolerare, which means 'to bear' or 'to endure'. So a tolerant plant or animal can 'bear' hard conditions like heat or drought without harm.
