Morphologically a regular nominalization of 'reluctant', but the physics sense is a specialized technical extension (analogy to 'resistance') that is not obvious to general learners.

Etymology

Reluctance in physics uses the same roots re- 'back' and luct 'struggle', so a helpful way to remember it is as a magnetic kind of 'resistance' that 'pulls back' the magnetic field. That's why higher reluctance makes it harder for the magnetic field to pass through a material, much like electrical resistance slows electric current.
