Etymology

The word refraction comes from the Latin root frangere, which means 'to break'. A helpful image is a stick in water that looks bent because light changes direction when it moves from air into water, so the light seems to 'break' its straight path and that is why refraction means the bending or change of direction of a wave as it passes between materials.
