Formally a nominalization of 'reflexive', but the social-research sense ('self-examination' or 'reflective practice') is a metaphorical extension that is not fully obvious from the physiological/grammatical senses.

Etymology

Reflexivity comes from the parts re- 'back' and flex 'bend', the same idea as reflect to 'look back'. In research and everyday life, reflexivity means you 'look back' at your own actions and ideas to see how they affect your work.
