Surface Forms
Morphology
psychographics = psychographic (semi-transparent) = psycho + graphic + s
The form is built from the psychographic base plus plural -s, but the specialized field meaning is conventional and only partly predictable from the parts.
Etymology
Psychographics combines psycho- meaning 'mind', as in psychology, and -graphics meaning 'picture' or 'drawing'. So it is like making a 'picture of people's minds', which is why psychographics means studying people's values, beliefs, and interests to understand and group them for market research.
