Etymology
Phenyl comes from the chemical name phenol, which goes back to the Greek root phain- meaning 'to show'. In chemistry, phenyl is used as an adjective to say a compound has a benzene 'ring' of six carbon atoms with one hydrogen removed, so calling something phenyl means it contains that ring.
