Morphology
participate = part (semi-transparent) = particip + ate
The sense 'take part' is related to the common word 'part', but the stem 'particip-' differs in form and the affixal structure is Latin-derived, so the composition is only partly obvious to learners.
Etymology
Participate comes from Latin parts part and capere, which mean 'part' and 'to take', and you can see the 'cap' in capture. So to participate is to 'take a part' in something, meaning to join in or be involved with others.
