The adjective is regularly formed from the medical noun 'paraplegia', but that noun itself is not semantically transparent to an average learner.
Etymology
Paraplegic comes from the Greek parts para- meaning 'beside' and -plegia meaning 'a strike' or 'paralysis', and it is related to the word paralysis. So paraplegic as an adjective means having paralysis in the lower half of the body, which explains why it describes being unable to move from the waist down.
