Etymology
The word mescal for the small cactus with strong effects comes from Spanish mezcal, which goes back to the Nahuatl word mexcalli meaning 'oven-cooked agave'. Because cooked agave and powerful plants were both important in old ceremonies, the same name was used for this ritual cactus.
