Morphology

haywire = hay + wire (opaque) = hay + wire

Although the word is historically built from 'hay' + 'wire', the modern sense 'malfunctioning or out of control' is not a predictable meaning from those parts.

Etymology

The adjective haywire for machines or plans comes from the same farm wire used for quick, rough fixes; because things held together with haywire could fail or get messy, we say a system or plan 'went haywire' when it stops working or goes out of control.
