fraction = fract + ion
The mathematical sense is historically related to 'breaking into parts' but the combining form 'fract-' is not a standalone English base, so the relation is not transparently useful for learners.
Etymology
Fraction comes from the Latin root fract meaning 'to break', just like the word fragment, so a mathematical fraction shows a 'broken' part of a whole, for example 'one half' of a cake.
