Morphology

convection = convect (semi-transparent) = con + vect + ion

The noun is a regular nominalization of the verb 'convect' (convect + -ion) so the formation is morphologically regular, but the verb and the combining form 'vect' are not familiar to general learners and the usage is technical.

Etymology

Convection comes from con- 'together' and a part that means 'to carry', the same idea you see in convey and vehicle. So think of heat being 'carried together' by rising warm air or moving water, which is why convection means heat moved by a liquid or gas.
