The word 'compensation' is clearly derived from 'compensate' with the noun-forming suffix '-ation'.
Etymology
Compensation comes from the parts com- ('with') and pens- (a word for 'weigh' that later meant 'pay'), so it meant 'making up' or 'balancing' something. That's why in psychology compensation is when someone tries to 'make up' for a weakness by showing a stronger trait.
