Morphology
The term is directly compositional: 'carbonic' denotes relation to carbon/CO2 and 'acid' denotes an acid, so together they refer to an acid related to carbon (i.e. the acid formed from dissolved carbon dioxide). This follows common scientific naming and is cross-linguistically cognate, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents can infer the general meaning (though detailed chemical properties are technical).
Etymology
Carbonic acid literally tells how it forms: carbonic comes from the carbon in 'carbon dioxide' and acid means a substance that makes water a little sour. When 'carbon dioxide' dissolves in 'water' it makes this weak 'acid', so the name explains the substance that helps control the acid balance in blood and makes rainwater a little acidic.
