Morphology

cantonment = canton (opaque) = canton + ment

Although the word contains the productive noun-forming suffix '-ment', the base 'canton' does not transparently yield the meaning 'military camp' for an average learner.

Etymology

Cantonment comes from the French word cantonner, and the root canton means 'corner' or a small district, so it originally named a place where troops were put or 'quartered' in an area. That's why a cantonment today is a military camp where soldiers are housed.
