The word is formed transparently from bio- plus stratigraphy, but the result is a specialized geological term whose exact meaning is not obvious to a general learner.

Etymology

Biostratigraphy joins bio- 'life' and stratigraphy, a word made from parts that mean 'layers' and 'writing', like photography 'writing with light'. So, biostratigraphy is 'using life to read rock layers', which is why it means studying fossils to find the relative ages of rocks and to match layers across places.
