Etymology

Accolade comes from old parts ad- 'to' and collum 'neck', so it originally meant 'to the neck'. Long ago a ruler would touch or embrace someone's neck in a knighting ceremony as a sign of honor, and that gesture later came to mean any award or public praise we call an accolade today.
