Morphology

abysmal = abyss (semi-transparent) = abyss + al

The form still clearly contains 'abyss' plus '-al', but the modern sense 'extremely bad or appalling' is a metaphorical extension rather than a literal compositional meaning.

Etymology

Abysmal also came to mean 'extremely bad'. It comes from abyss meaning 'bottomless deep', so people used abysmal for things so bad they felt bottomless or hopeless, and that is why it now means very bad.
