Etymology
The word V-1 comes from the German name Vergeltungswaffe, which means 'retaliation weapon', and the '1' showed it was the first of these weapons. That's why V-1 refers to the first German jet-powered flying bomb of World War II, a guided missile used to attack cities and nicknamed the 'buzz bomb' because of its loud engine.
