Etymology
Pneumocystis comes from Greek parts pneumo- meaning 'lung', like in pneumonia, and -cystis meaning 'sac' or 'cyst', like in cyst. So, Pneumocystis is named for the tiny sac-like forms it makes in the lungs, which is why it causes lung infections.
