Carboniferous = carbon (semi-transparent) = carbon + iferous

The form is analyzable as 'carbon' + '-iferous' ('bearing'), but the geological-period label is specialized and not fully predictable from the parts.

Etymology

Carboniferous comes from the Latin parts carbo ('coal' or 'carbon') and -ferous ('bearing' or 'carrying'), the same carbo you see in carbon. So the Carboniferous is the period that was 'coal-bearing', which explains why lots of coal formed then.
