Etymology
Carboniferous comes from the Latin parts carbo ('coal' or 'carbon') and -ferous ('bearing' or 'carrying'), the same carbo you see in carbon. So the Carboniferous is the period that was 'coal-bearing', which explains why lots of coal formed then.
