Morphology

writing + system

The meaning is directly compositional: 'writing' (written representation) combined with 'system' (a formal method) yields a method or system for representing language in writing. This noun–noun compound follows a common cross-linguistic pattern, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily infer the intended sense.

Etymology

The compound writing system joins writing, meaning making marks 'to record speech', and system, meaning 'a set of rules'. Long ago, people made organized sets of signs, for example alphabets or carved characters, so each sign stood for a sound or a whole word. So, writing system means 'a method of using symbols to show the sounds or words of a language'.
